Welcome to Reason To Believe – a website dedicated to addressing questions about Christianity and the Bible.
I’m Michael Shaw, a Theology student at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. I previously worked as a Journalist and Assistant Producer at the BBC in Belfast. I’m married to Lauren and enjoy good coffee, watching films, running, and reading.
Some people today describe Christianity, and indeed all religious belief, as “blind faith.” But this isn’t the kind of faith which is encouraged by the Bible itself. Christianity is credible, reasonable, and based on evidence. And so we can have confidence that Jesus really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). As a result, I want to take seriously the command in 1 Peter 3:15 – “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
But how can we know that Christianity is true? That’s what Reason To Believe is about: it’s an opportunity to ask questions and discover more about who God is through His word, and through the person of Jesus Christ. In the end, my aim is simply to know Christ better and make Him better known.
I subscribe to the historic beliefs of Christianity taken from the Bible and summed up in statements of faith including the Apostles’ Creed and the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith.
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
– C.S. Lewis.
